exhibitor Q & A

My supervisor told me I’m not getting a raise because of the economy. So what are some other perks I can negotiate in lieu of a pay increase?

With the economy still battered and bruised, it’s clear many companies aren’t likely to raise employees’ base pay anytime soon. But that still leaves the door open for innovative benefits you might be able to negotiate from management.

Tell your boss you understand a salary increase may be impractical now, but ask if the company might consider other monetary incentives. If your company is willing, offer specific suggestions, such as compensation tied to strategies that reduce costs or generate additional revenue. For example, if you cut trade show expenses by 10 percent, you could ask for 1 percent of the savings. Or if you develop a new revenue stream via your program, maybe you get a percentage of its return. It’s a win-win situation for you and the company because you only get the bonus if you help the company’s bottom line.

If that doesn’t fly, propose alternative forms of compensation, such as equipment your company could provide that would help you be more productive — or additional time off during slow periods. While these perks may not pay your mortgage, they might make your life a little easier. Finally, ask for additional training. Adding a new skill may make you more valuable to your employer at present; plus, it could be a wise investment in your future as well.
