RSNA Exhibit Hall Floor Plan Research Below are two floor plans. On the left is a typical rectilinear layout. On the right is a hub-and-spoke layout. In about three weeks, RSNA, the world’s largest radiological show, will open in Chicago. Attendees – most doctors – are expecting to see a typical rectilinear floor plan. This year that floor plan has been changed to use the hub-and-spoke approach. |

Background Information According to RSNA, for five years they have been debating the hub and spoke design but until a method of measurement and analysis came along they had no way to verify if the new design would really work. Three Motivations: RSNA has made this change in the Scientific Exhibit* layout to achieve three goals: 1 - Easier consumption: make the layout easier to consume 2 - Efficient consumption: get the doctors to more areas of interest faster 3 - Focused consumption: allow doctors to get all information in a given field in one stop. * What is a scientific exhibit? Medical meetings often have two types of exhibits: Scientific and Technical. Technical exhibits showcase commercial vendors. Scientific exhibits showcase research papers, similar to a science fair. Each has its own dedicated space and floor plan. Both types of exhibits are important to the medical profession. Old Layout: Organization and Attendee Behavior The old floor plan was divided into rectilinear sections based on medical specialization. For example, Musculoskeletal - breast - obstetrics - pediatrics. Each specialization was further broken into three sections: 1 - Research - medical procedures currently being tested but not yet proven out 2 - Education - practices & procedures that had been tested & approved for use 3 - Informatics - technical innovations and changes in the industry In the old layout, if I was a heart specialist I had to go to one area to see heart research, another area for education and a third area for informatics. Many feel this was inconvenient and inefficient. New Layout: Organization and Attendee Behavior The new floor plan is divided into a hub-and-spoke configuration. • each spoke of the layout is a specialization • all three components of the specialized field are down that spoke. The new floor plan has no history of attendee behavior. The goal is greater efficiency. |
