EXHIBITOR Magazine Goes for the Gold... And Wins
While the Olympians were dreaming of gold medals in London, EXHIBITOR magazine was dreaming of a different kind of gold: national and international awards from the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) and Trade Association and Business Publications International (TABPI).
"These national and international honors represent the pinnacle of success for B2B trade magazines," says Travis Stanton, editor of EXHIBITOR magazine. "In fact, we often say that the Tabbie Awards, presented by TABPI, are like the Olympic medals in B2B publishing because they're the only international awards handed out in the trade-pub niche."
Ultimately, EXHIBITOR took home three gold awards, including two national awards (For Best Case History and Best How-To Article) from ASBPE and one international honor (for Best Editorial) from TABPI. The Gold Tabbie Award honored Travis Stanton's "Arrowheads and Avatars," while the Gold Azbee Awards recognized Lena Valenty's "Samsung Stakes its Claim," and Charles Pappas' "Eight Habits of Highly Ineffective Staffers." This is Valenty's second consecutive Gold Azbee in the Best Case History category, and Stanton's second Gold Tabbie for Best Editorial in four years.
This year's Tabbie Awards competition featured nearly 500 entries with nominations coming from countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, France, India, South Africa, and more.
"Each year, the Tabbies cull the best in business-to-business journalism from countries quite literally across the world," says Paul Heney, president of TABPI. "Winning a Gold Tabbie is a significant event for any publication, as it recognizes adherence to a high level of both editorial and design excellence."
In addition to its three gold awards, EXHIBITOR netted nine more regional, national, and international honors in categories such as Best Original Research, Best Feature Article, Best Profile Article, and Best Feature Design, among others.
"The writers, editors, and designers at EXHIBITOR strive to do their very best work on each and every issue," says Stanton. "It's truly rewarding to know that our best is also among the best in the industry."
TABPI endeavors to bring together editors working for English-language publications worldwide, and encourage a common dedication to editorial ethics and excellence. The first phase of the organization's objective is accomplished by the creation of a comprehensive editorial and design competition. This competition, The Tabbies, recognizes excellence in trade, association and business publications. Additionally, it will expose editors to similar b2b magazines and their local practices across the globe. Associations in different countries and regions will be invited to participate as official partners. Future phases include partnering with additional editorial associations around the world and working toward bringing various local groups together, allowing them to share current resources to each other's benefit.
Founded in 1964, ASBPE is the professional association for full-time and freelance editors, writers, art directors, and designers employed in the business, trade, and specialty press. ASBPE is widely known for its annual Awards of Excellence competition (aka the Azbee Awards), which recognizes the best in editorial, design, and online achievement. The organization also supports the annual ASBPE National Editorial Conference. Regular educational seminars are held by local chapters. The society is operated in accordance with a set of bylaws drafted by the national board and ratified through a member vote.
