Marathon Petroleum Chooses Sound Domes from Brown Innovations
Marathon Petroleum recently came to Brown Innovations with a perplexing
and seemingly unsolvable problem: how to effectively monitor audio in
their command and control centers without the use of isolating and
uncomfortable headphones. Conventional speakers created sound bleed from
one console station to the next. After trying alternative directional
speakers, Marathon chose Brown's Sound Domes as the ultimate solution.
Thanks to the highly focused speakers, operators at Marathon can monitor
independent audio experiences, in the same room, without any overlap from
one terminal to the next. "The experience is unparalleled! When standing
under the domes you can hear everything perfectly, but move away and it
completely disappears. It generates a 'cone of silence' of high quality
sound, something the other directional speakers did not achieve" said Mike
Robell of Marathon Petroleum.
The spherical sound dome mounted overhead focuses sound directly to each
listener. The sphere acts as a lens, creating an audio "hologram" where
voices are actually heard as if speakers were floating just outside each
listener's ears. Amazingly, the technology is so precisely focused, only
individuals seated at each screen can hear audio playing through the
speaker; others just steps away hear virtually nothing. It's like
listening through headphones, but without the headphones.
