Tom Bowman Wins 'Best Public Advocate for Sustainability' Award
Tom Bowman, green business consultant and author of The Green Edge, has been named the “Best Public Advocate for Sustainability” by the Sustainable Business Council (SBC) of Los Angeles.
This prestigious award recognizes the broad impact of Bowman’s work to promote sustainability to business owners by engaging them with the issue and providing them with proven, cost-effective solutions.
Bowman says he felt compelled to work on the crucial social issue of sustainability by greening the United States meetings industry – a fragmented industry with a collective economic impact of $907 billion, or 5.6% of the national GDP, according to a 2012 Convention Industry Council report. Bowman has built momentum within this highly diverse group by organizing and participating in conferences, delivering keynote addresses, writing articles, launching a podcast and publishing a book to share his empirical research with the exhibition and events industry. “Business is powerful in addressing social challenges and I believe that engaging business owners in sustainability is one of the keys to solving this problem,” says Bowman.
Judges selected Bowman for his commitment to sustainability that goes beyond greening his own business. “Tom has used the award-winning green business plan he implemented at his own company to propel his advocacy work – by demonstrating the business case for going green and working to get that message out to the business community,” says Susan Frank, President & COO of The Better World Group, and one of the judges of this year’s SBC awards. Bowman’s company received an inaugural Cool California Small Business of the Year award for slashing its carbon emissions by 65% in two years and is the first marketing communications firm in the U.S. to receive sustainability certification under both the APEX/ASTM (U.S.) and FAMAB (German) industry standards.
