SAF-West Adds 175 ton, 240” Press Brake for Architectural Metal Fabrication

2/7/2013 - With the recent installation of a new 175 ton AccurPress 240" precision press brake, SAF-West can now supply the architectural market with 20' formed sheet metal parts. Close on the heels of opening their new California anodizing line, the addition of a large press brake complements existing SAF-West metal and fabrication services such as shearing, welding, and routing capabilities. Advantages of 20' material include: better material optimization, reduced installation labor, and fewer leak-prone joints and seams.

The new capability will enhance SAF's reputation as a one-stop global supplier of architectural metal. "This new press brake gives SAF customers another reason to rely on us for architectural metal, fabrication, and customer service that are simply not available anywhere else under one roof," says Penn McClatchey, SAF Co-CEO. Penn directed the opening of the SAF Metal Fabrication Villa Rica, GA facility in 2002 that currently operates with 100 employees in a 100,000 sq. ft. facility.

In 67 years SAF has grown from a regional aluminum distributor, finisher, and fabricator into a full service international resource for architectural aluminum and metal fabrication. Additionally, SAF is a mill-direct distributor of aluminum coils, cut sheet, and custom sheet fabrication services. SAF has gradually expanded their Western US presence since the 2007 opening of its SAF-West Redding, CA branch, including the addition of a state-of-the-art anodizing center in 2012 to its core aluminum distribution and metal fabrication services. SAF hopes to eventually duplicate the functionality of SAF Metal Fabrication at their SAF-West plant.

Brake forming involves positioning sheet metal between a punch and a die, then lowering the punch onto a metal sheet that is forced into the shape of a stationary die. The die is mounted on the press brake frame and the punch is on the hydraulically powered upper beam. The shape of the punch and die along with the amount of applied pressure determine the bend angle.
