SmithBucklin Executive Vice President Michael Payne Receives Professional Convention Management Association Education Foundation Award

SmithBucklin, an association
management company, announced today that SmithBucklin Executive Vice President
Michael Payne was recognized by the Professional Convention Management
Association (PCMA) Education Foundation as the 2007 Meeting Professional
Honoree at the 2007 PCMA Education Foundation Dinner Celebrating Professional
Achievement. Payne and two other award recipients were honored by 1,400
attendees at the June 13 Washington, D.C., event recognizing professionals for
their contributions to PCMA and the meetings and hospitality industry.
‘The 2007 honorees are extremely respected for their vast industry knowledge
and for their dedication and support of PCMA and the PCMA Education
Foundation,’ said PCMA Education Foundation Executive Director Susan Salem
Euritt.
PCMA President and CEO Deborah Sexton added that the 2007 honorees ‘have used
their skills and expertise to better our profession.’
The PCMA Education Foundation designs and creates programs to encourage the
highest levels of professionalism in the meetings and conventions industry,
while also supporting the mission of the PCMA through fundraising and grant
giving. Founded in 1947, PCMA is a nonprofit international association of
professionals in the meetings industry whose mission is to deliver
breakthrough education and promote the value of professional convention
management.
Payne’s SmithBucklin responsibilities include oversight of Convention & Trade
Show Services in Washington, D.C.; Government Relations Services; Washington,
D.C., office operations; and St. Louis office operations and client
management. Payne also is SmithBucklin’s executive representative to the
hospitality industry and serves as the executive director of the International
Association of Airport Duty Free Stores, an international trade association of
approximately 500 company members.
Prior to joining SmithBucklin in 1980, Payne held several U.S. government
positions, including deputy to the assistant secretary for congressional
affairs in the U.S. Department of Commerce. He also worked in the
Department’s Office of Coastal Zone Management and the Economic Development
Administration. He has held many PCMA volunteer positions, including chairman
of the PCMA board in 2004. He currently serves on the board of the PCMA
Education Foundation and as an advisory board member for Starwood Hotels. He
has served in the past on the board for the Center for Exhibition Industry
Research and the advisory board of Hilton Hotels. He is a member of PCMA,
Meeting Professionals International and ASAE & The Center for Association
Leadership.
