It's a Small World
Small was big at the 1958 California Hobby Show in Los Angeles: Scale models of everything from airplanes to boats and cars captured attendees' attention at the annual trade fair. The diminutive wonders included replicas of the Ferris wheel from Chicago's 1893 World's Fair and the Eiffel Tower from Paris' 1889 Universal Exposition. Constructed of 25,000 and 30,000 toothpicks, respectively, the small-scale spectacles stood out in a show that featured such modern marvels as an all-in-one entertainment unit combining a tape recorder, hi-fi record player, and AM-FM radio.
