fter building modest pavilions for several world's fairs and expos, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS)decided to construct one for the ages at the 1964 New York World's Fair. Recreating the façade of its Salt Lake City temple, the LDS built a concrete pavilion topped by a gilded statue of the angel Moroni. Inside, church missionaries escorted visitors to a 9-ton replica of the famed "The Christus" statue and two 110-foot-long murals depicting the story of Christ and the saints. Even with competition from the Vatican and Billy Graham's pavilions, the Mormon effort drew nearly 6 million visitors.
