| The world of tomorrow would be so full of marvels, General Motors Corp. assured attendees in its Futurama exhibit at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, that they would be as astonished as Alice in Wonderland. But this surreal scene was more Buck Rogers than Mad Hatter, as the Alice pictured here romps among the 230,000-square-foot exhibit’s metropolis of skyscrapers, airports, and superhighways. Watching from a conveyor belt that whipped 70,000 people a day around the exhibit, visitors also glimpsed GM’s visions of underwater resorts, moon bases, and rainforests cleared by laser beams. |
