EXHIBITOR Magazine Senior Writer Charles Pappas, Author of Flying Cars, Zombie Dogs, and Robot Overlords addresses U.S. State Department
Addressing an assemblage of State Department personnel in Washington, DC last month, EXHIBITOR Magazine senior writer Charles Pappas, author of Flying Cars, Zombie Dogs, and Robot Overlords, examined the history of world expos and the prominent role the United States has played in them since the 1850s.
Part of an ongoing speaker series, the talk took place in the Ralph J. Bunche Library, originally founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1789. Pappas explained how world’s fair exhibitions played a key role as change agents, launching not only new products and technologies, like the telephone and television, but also propelling their host cities and countries onto a world-wide wide stage economically. “Using the techniques common to every exhibitor from immersive design to dramatic demonstrations,” says Pappas, “these expos brought us the world we know today, including voting machines, IMAX movies, Ferris Wheels, X-rays, elevators, even the Statue of Liberty.”
Hosting nearly 20 world’s fairs in the 19th and 20th centuries, and slated to appear at the 2020 expo in Dubai in two years, the United States is again focusing on bringing a fair back to the country. While its most recent bid for holding the 2023 world expo in Minnesota lost out to Buenos Aries, Pappas expects that it will try again, with perhaps San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Chicago vying for the 2027/2028 or 2030 fair. “During the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, ads were run encouraging people to re-finance their homes to fund a trip to the fair,” Pappas says. “Nearly 25 percent of the country ended up going to it. I like to think that, done right, we can do a world’s fair worth mortgaging your home to see.”
“Charles Pappas has done a fantastic job describing what Expos or World’s Fairs are, and their evolution from industrial exhibitions to nation branding events, and why they were, are, and continue to be important global platforms to ‘connect minds and create the future!’” remarks Matthew Asada, State Department project manager for the U.S. pavilion at Expo2020, “We look forward to seeing what the world will present at Expo 2020 Dubai!”
