he 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, NY, was famous for its modern marvels, such as an electric kitchen, a lawn mower, and an X-ray machine. But it was a relic of a fading frontier that was arguably the biggest draw. Recruited by an expo publicity rep who found her drunk in a Montana brothel, Martha Jane Canary - aka Calamity Jane - drew thousands to the fair's Wild West show. Appearing alongside other legends like Geronimo, she dazzled crowds with a showmanship that belied her chronic inebriation. Two years later, Calamity Jane was dead from the effects of alcoholism.
