Photo: Jack Masey

hen the United States decided to take part in the 1956 Jeshyn International Fair in Kabul, Afghanistan, pavilion director Jack Masey approached Buckminster Fuller to use one of the engineer's geodesic domes. After Fuller designed and built the dome, its components were airlifted to Kabul, where workers assembled its 480 color-coded aluminum tubes in just 48 hours. Resembling a hut-like yurt, the 100-foot-diameter, 35-foot-tall structure drew hundreds of locals, who admired its exhibits depicting scenes from American life, including a TV studio, a Lionel train set, and a talking mechanical chicken.
