arpetecture. Woven from the words “carpet” and “architecture,” this wonderfully warped concept represents both a new line of carpeting from Desso Holding NV as well as the company’s exhibit-design directive. For not only did the Dutch carpet manufacturer want to display the complete Carpetecture line in its exhibit at Interieur Kortrijk 2008, it wanted its entire exhibit to embody the Carpetecture brand.

This challenge fell to the team at Munich, Germany-based Tulp Design, which transformed a 26-by-26-foot space into a structure that Exhibit Design Awards judges called “utterly elegant in its simplicity and construction.”

Exemplifying the functionality of the Carpetecture brand, the exhibit comprised a simple architectural form at its core. However, the exterior’s lofty angles and unique planes cloaked in Desso’s carpeting were anything but basic.

To create an eye-catching aesthetic, designers positioned one corner of the exhibit just inches from the convention-center floor. From this shin-level height, an angular plane shot up and across the expanse of the booth, where structural angles — as well as those created by carpet patterns and seams — drew the eye across Desso’s carpet and to its logo perched atop the structure’s highest point at roughly 11 feet.
The stark-white interior provided a welcome respite for attendees. Bench-style seating running along two of the three angular interior walls featured splashes of red. However, designers bathed the remaining space in matte-white laminate, directing attendees’ focus to the roughly 130 carpet swatches displayed in 32 built-in cubbyholes.

By successfully marrying form and function, the team at Tulp Design created an impressive exhibit that left even the most accomplished carpetects completely floored.e

A giant carpet swatch of sorts, the exhibit’s exterior displayed five different carpet samples atop eye-catching angles and planes. Inside, designers tucked actual carpet swatches into a series of 32 cubbyholes. According to Exhibit Design Awards judges, this exhibit created the perfect blend of functionality and aesthetics. “Both the interior display area and the exterior surfaces offer functional and hands-on ways to interact with the product — all without making a mess of the design.”
