Great Barrier Reef Ranks First as World's Best Place to Visit
7/7/2016
The iconic Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia, the world’s largest coral reef system and Australia’s great natural wonder, has been named as the No. 1 Best Place to Visit in the World in U.S. News & World Report’s World’s Best Places to Visit for 2016-17. One of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef offers a myriad of colorful and exotic marine life, stunning coral cays, picturesque tropical islands and golden beaches, as well as some of the best dive spots in the world.
Leigh Arredondo, Tourism and Events Queensland’s (TEQ) International Director, The Americas, said the Reef’s status as number one was a vote of confidence in its world-wide tourism appeal. “The Great Barrier Reef is a living treasure and a major tourism drawcard for visitors to Queensland,” he said. “It is an unrivalled experience that tens of thousands of people are enjoying every day, drawing more than 1.9 million visitors each year. It’s ours to protect and share, and this latest result reaffirms just how important the Reef is to Queensland’s tourism economy.”
The majestic Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and the world’s largest living organism, stretching 1,430 miles and featuring an abundance of marine life with over 3,000 individual reef systems and coral cays as well as hundreds of tropical islands with some of the world’s most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches. Because of its natural beauty, the Great Barrier Reef has become one of the world’s most sought after tourist destinations, offering an abundance of experiences for travelers such as snorkeling, scuba diving, helicopter tours, glass-bottomed boat viewing, educational trips, cruise ship tours, whale watching and swimming with dolphins. The Reef is particularly popular with North American travelers due to its year-long warm climate as well as its easy accessibility with direct flights through Brisbane, Australia from many major ports including Los Angeles, Dallas and a brand new Vancouver route.
To identify the top vacation spots worldwide, U.S. News analyzed more than 250 destinations using a methodology that combines travelers’ opinions with expert analysis and current trends. Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef was a favorite amongst North American travelers, leading all world destinations ahead of Paris in second and French Polynesia’s Bora Bora in third.
