Nashville's Convention Center Authority Announces Land Acquisition
6/9/2026
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Convention Center Authority announced Tuesday the purchase of the former Estes Kefauver Federal Building parking garage site, a 1.3-acre lot located less than one block from Music City Center at 811 McGavock Street.
The land purchase comes one year after a feasibility study showed the existing downtown convention center was losing business due to space limitations and availability constraints. The study recommended an expansion of 587,000 square feet to meet current and future demand.
“Finding that much space on one lot in close proximity to our building is tough, if not impossible, so we’ll likely have to build on multiple sites,” said Convention Center Authority President and Chief Executive Officer Charles Starks. “This property is a great start toward that end, as we continue to look at property around us.”
The sale of the Kefauver property by U.S. General Services Administration, at a cost of $52,030,000, will reduce the federal real estate footprint in downtown Nashville and benefit local development that could accommodate more conventions, tradeshows, and events.
“This site gives Music City Center the flexibility it needs to support Nashville’s continued growth as a premier convention and tourism destination,” Starks said. “Being adjacent to our current facility, it’s uniquely valuable for future expansion, and we appreciate GSA’s partnership in helping make this property available.”
Site selection is the next step in expansion exploration. No further plans have been made.
Since opening in May 2013, MCC has hosted 2,802 events, including 584 local nonprofit events, with 5.5 million attendees. That equates to $5.1 billion in direct economic impact for the greater Nashville area.
