Pink salt is Pakistan’s natural treasure — a symbol of purity, healing, and resilience formed over 800 million years ago in the Salt Range. Though India markets itself as a key global supplier, all true pink rock salt originates from Pakistan. Thus, the Pakistan pavilion seeks to reclaim this legacy, presenting Pink Salt as both a national emblem and a vision for natural harmony and sustainability — brought to life in a pavilion built entirely from pink rock salt.
Curated by renowned artist Noorjehan Bilgrami, the pavilion’s theme, The Universe in a Grain of Salt, uses minimalist, meaningful design to interpret the Expo’s vision of Designing Future Society for Our Lives and its sub-theme Saving Lives. The structure — featuring untreated rock salt, hand-hammered copper tiles, charcoal, and wood — offers a tactile, immersive experience that connects visitors with Pakistan’s heritage and the elemental power of nature.
The journey begins with a glowing façade of copper tiles, leading onto shimmering pink salt floor tiles. Visitors pause in a Healing Garden infused with dry salt vapor, promoting well-being in a serene, meditative setting. Sculptural salt columns from the Khewra, Warcha, and Kalabagh mines flank the path, alongside handmade copper craftsmanship from Peshawar artisans. A slate wall illustrates the history of the Salt Range, from ancient origins to Alexander the Great’s legendary discovery, while a poetic charcoal wall features verses by Zehra Nigah, narrating salt’s journey through Pakistan’s history and culture.
A high-definition art film, specially composed with music for the pavilion, immerses visitors in the subterranean beauty of salt mines. The experience culminates in an interactive display where guests explore the mineral’s properties, cultural impact, and trade potential.
The pavilion stands as a sanctuary for contemplation, connection, and collective well-being — embodying the message that even the most humble natural element can unite the world and inspire a sustainable future.
