Seeing the Future

Organized by a mouthwash mogul, the 1911 Dresden International Hygiene Exhibition showcased the cutting edge of preventive health measures. Exhibits spanned the centuries, from the Stone Age to the 20th Century, with techniques for protecting food from insects in ancient Babylon and human organs made transparent so their functions were easier for visitors to understand. The show's poster, shown here, became a common visual that symbolized scientific research into the human body. It was also a hit with the Surrealists (e.g., Magritte, Dalí) who worked all-seeing eyes into their art.
