Cobo Center Announces the Launch of 2019 Cobo Cares Season of Health and Wellness Events
5/16/2019
Claude Molinari, general manager of SMG/Cobo Center, today announced the launch of the 2019 Cobo Cares season of free health and wellness events. The Cobo Cares program provides free exercise, networking and community engagement opportunities to local Detroit workers and residents. The Cobo Cares season, which begins this week and goes through the fall, includes exercise activities including Zumba with Ivy and yoga with Citizen Yoga coupled with opportunities to give back to local nonprofits. The first event, Skyline Yoga with Citizen Yoga is this Saturday, May 11 at Cobo Center.

“The Cobo Cares program is a wonderful way to gather together and give back to our community while having some fun too,” said Claude Molinari, general manager of Cobo Center. “Community engagement is a core value of our sustainability program. Partnering with local nonprofits is very important to us at Cobo Center. We have an exciting lineup of events this Cobo Cares season and we encourage everyone to participate.”

Cobo Cares

For the third year, the Cobo Cares season offers thirteen health and wellness events from May through October for workers and residents in Southeast Michigan and downtown Detroit, providing networking, exercise and introductions to local area non-profit agencies.

“We can get from 10 – 60 people at these events, and the local non profit agencies set up a presence with information about what they do, how to donate and how to get involved,” said Molinari. “We work with the community to make connections, and encourage continued networking and engagement.”

Last year the Cobo Cares program collected more than $2,500 in funds and hundreds of pounds of goods such as books, hygiene kits for the homeless, school supplies etc., from the events.

The 2019 Cobo Cares program will support local causes including Common Ground Sanctuary, Green Living Science, Alternatives for Girls, COTs, Detroit Public Schools, Eastern Market, Zumba with Ivy, Bees in the D, Michigan Humane Society, Green Living Science, Detroit Boxing Gym and Rock CF Foundation.

Outdoor activities are held at Cobo Square, the outdoor terrace at Cobo Center in view of the 4,000 square-foot interactive marquee digital sign. Indoor activities are located in the beautiful 30,000 square-foot, three-story glass atrium, overlooking the Detroit River.

In 2018, Cobo Center volunteers partnered with Humble Design as part of the Cobo Cares program to help build tables and bookcases for families transitioning out of homeless shelters. Volunteers also spent the day at Humble Design’s Pontiac warehouse helping with cleaning, repairing and renovating. The 2018 Cobo Cares season concluded with the annual Detroit “Adopt-A-Child for Christmas” program sponsored by Cobo Center and the City of Detroit. The program paired thousands of local Detroit children with sponsors who gifted them Christmas presents including toys and warm clothes at a Christmas party held at Cobo Center.
