Huntington Convention Center Running More Than $850,000 Ahead of Budget
8/1/2019
The Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland posted net revenues of $6.6 million in the second quarter of 2019, as reported by the Cuyahoga County Convention Facilities Development Corporation (CCCFDC) at its quarterly board meeting earlier today. With net revenues more than $600,000 ahead of budget, the CCCFDC reports that the Huntington Convention Center is currently operating $850,000 ahead of budget through the first six months of 2019. “This facility continues to operate at a very profitable level more than $2 million ahead of projections,” said George Hillow, CCCFDC Executive Director. “During the past four years, the CCCFDC has completely funded a self-sustaining capital improvement budget and returned nearly a million dollars to Cuyahoga County in revenue surplus.” The Huntington Convention Center has hosted 115 events in 2019, including 14 city-wide conventions, filling 51,919 hotel room nights, and attracting 168,660 visitors, as reported by SMG, the manager of the facility. The second quarter financial numbers do not include the attendance and financial numbers from the facility recently hosting PLAY BALL PARK as part of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game festivities. “This strong second quarter financial report continues to illustrate how the Huntington Convention Center is an economic driver for our region, bringing in national conventions, thousands of out-of-town visitors, and creating and sustaining nearly 700 jobs,” said Hillow. “Based on second quarter results and future contracted events, the Huntington Convention Center is forecast to exceed budgeted revenues and net income in 2019.” An analysis prepared by C. H. Johnson Consulting, a market, economic and financial consultant to the hospitality industry, shows that 698 jobs were supported by the Huntington Convention Center in 2018, nearly double compared to 2017. C.H. Johnson utilized the 2018 Delegate Expenditure report developed by Conventional Wisdom and tabulated the results through the employment module of IMPLAN (IMpact Analysis for PLANning). The CCCFDC also reported that the SMG sales team, in conjunction with Destination Cleveland, has booked 118 events for this year and future years during the first six months of 2019, representing 72,019 hotel room nights, 210,775 in attendance, $1.024 million in forecast net revenue and $4.98 million in forecast catering revenue. About the CCCFDC The CCCFDC is a nonprofit organization formed by the Cuyahoga County Council for the purpose of promoting the revitalization of Greater Cleveland/ Cuyahoga County and enhancing the economic growth and employment opportunities in the area on behalf of the County. The CCCFDC oversees the operation and management of the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland and the Global Center for Health Innovation. In addition to overseeing operation and management of County-owned assets, the CCCFDC and its board of directors approves the annual budget appropriation for each facility and works closely with the management team, SMG, hired by Cuyahoga County.
