Q.
Stress is taking a toll on me, and I'm not sure where to turn. How do I approach my company about mental health support without it affecting how I'm perceived by my colleagues?

A.
Approaching your company about mental health support is an important step, and doing so thoughtfully can help mitigate any concerns about how you might be perceived. Here are some strategies to consider:

First, familiarize yourself with your company's policies on mental health and its employee assistance programs to empower you during the conversation. Then, find a suitable time to discuss your concerns with either your supervisor or HR representative.

Before you meet, think about what you want to say. If you're concerned about perceptions, emphasize that you're seeking support discreetly and that mental health issues are extremely common and deserve attention. When you meet, focus on how mental health support can enhance productivity, not just for you but for the team as a whole. You can express that you're looking for resources that could benefit all employees.

After your initial conversation, follow up with an email expressing your appreciation for your manager's willingness to consider your concerns. Remember, mental health is an essential part of overall well-being, and advocating for support can create a healthier workplace for everyone. As the saying goes, “There is no health without mental health.” E
