Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for Mayo Civic Center Expansion

State and city leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony today for the expansion of the Mayo Civic Center, marking the beginning of the $79 million project, which will nearly double the size of the facility.

Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith addressed the ceremony attendees, who included Senators Carla Nelson and Dave Senjem, along with guests from the University of Minnesota Rochester, Rochester Community and Technical College, the Rochester School Board, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission, the Rochester Convention & Visitors Bureau; and leaders from the hospitality industry.

“This is exactly the kind of work that we like to build within communities,” said Lt. Governor Tina Smith. “This expansion will generate economic activity that is good for the entire state. This project is outstanding and building on the work happening elsewhere in the City of Rochester.”

Additional speakers at the event included Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede, City Council President Randy Staver, Senators Carla Nelson and Dave Senjem, Mayo Civic Center Commission Chair John Beltz, Rochester Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Brad Jones.

The ceremonial groundbreaking was held in the Mayo Civic Center circle drive near the existing Grand Ballroom, with Lt. Governor Tina Smith, Mayor Ardell Brede, and members of the Rochester City Council sinking the first shovels into the ground.

“We’re pleased that leaders from around the state recognize the importance of this expansion,” said Brad Jones, Executive Director of the Rochester Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The new Mayo Civic Center will help cement Rochester’s place as a first-rate city for meetings and events.”
